Aims of Twinning . . .
The Worldwide Twinning Movement aims to foster peace and understanding between peoples of different nations through the forging of friendships at "grass roots" level.
Regardless of what we think of politicians and politics the uncertainty of the post-Brexit situation means that we have an even greater need to have a better understanding of, and relationship with, our European neighbours. One of the most enjoyable ways of achieving this is the rapport established through twinning - by families, individuals, special interest groups and businesses.
The Callington & District Twinning Association has met and even surpassed those aims over the years. From a small start in 1982 the association has grown and many friendships have been formed that have even survived members moving away from the twin town.
As well as the individuals and families that take part in the annual visits to Guipavas and Barsbüttel, there have been many groups and organisations that have forged links with their French and German counterparts that include: the Callington Singers, Callington Primary School, Callington Football Club, the Callington Town Band, Callington Community College, Callington Young Farmers, students on work experience placements, and many others.
The mutual visits of the French to Callington and Barsbüttel, the English to Guipavas and Barsbüttel or the Germans to Callington and Guipavas have also been occasions for increasing the understanding of the local and cultural histories of the towns and people, as well as the surrounding areas of Cornwall, Brittany and Schleswig-Holstein.
The recent Friendship Link with Keila in Estonia has added a new dynamic to the situation and we look forward to forging new links.
The overriding memories of any visit, whether it is "home" or "away", are to be found in the warm welcome, the good food, the fine wines, the interesting activities, the new horizons and the fun and laughter enjoyed by all.
